I’ll never forget the feeling of looking forward to brunch with the gals, only for one of them to suggest we instead meet for brunch at one of their homes (not her own) and bring their husbands/fiancés since the game was on. I am the sole single woman, so some much-needed girl talk turned into stale conversation with their partners while the game droned on in the background. I felt so deflated and socially ambushed, as you describe. Inviting partners along is a special kind of ambush for a single person.
Gosh, I thought it was just me! Thanks for validating that it’s not!
Def not just you. I think it’s more wide spread than we believe …
Because I’m so careful about the social interactions I involve myself with, this rarely happens to me, but I absolutely loathe it.
It’s a form of being socially obtuse that some people seem to be infected with.
Their incapacity to understand social dynamics is not my problem!
And if they do make it my problem, that will be the last day we are in relationship.
“Socially obtuse” you are absolutely right. I have better boundaries now than I did back then.
And I am celebrating your better boundaries along with my own!
